How the NSW DKT works

You pass the Driver Knowledge Test to get your NSW learner licence. You can take it online at the end of a 4 to 6 hour interactive course, or in person at a Service NSW centre. The in-person test has traditionally been 45 multiple-choice questions in two parts, with a high pass mark: only 4 wrong in total, and only 1 in the road safety part. Either way, the questions come from the same NSW road rules.

NSW learners test FAQs

How many questions are in the NSW learners test?
The in-person NSW Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) has traditionally had 45 multiple-choice questions in two parts: 15 general knowledge and 30 road safety. Many learners now take the DKT online instead, as a 4 to 6 hour course with a test at the end.
What is the pass mark for the DKT?
For the in-person test, the traditional pass mark is 12 of 15 in general knowledge and 29 of 30 in road safety, so 41 of 45 overall, and you must pass both parts. Transport for NSW doesn't publish the format of the online test.
Are these practice questions free?
Yes. This site has 45 free questions with explanations and a free mock test. The Learners Test app has all 457 questions across 11 topics.
Is this the official NSW test?
No. NSW Learners Test and The Learners Test app are independent study tools and are not affiliated with Transport for NSW or Service NSW. Questions are written to the NSW Road User Handbook, which is the official source for the test.
